Detached housing changes the job
Staten Island is mostly houses standing on their own ground, and that makes demolition a different trade from the one practised across the water. Instead of stripping a unit inside an occupied building, the work is more often a whole structure coming down, or something standing separately on the property that has reached the end of its life. There is usually room to work. The constraints move from the neighbour through the wall to the driveway, the trees, the setback and what the ground is doing underneath.

A demolition is not finished when the structure is down. It is finished when the material is gone and the ground is workable again — level, clear, and ready for whatever is meant to happen next. That last part is where a lot of jobs are quietly left unfinished.
